1978年香川県生まれ。大阪育ち。京都芸術短期大学を卒業後、トルコ、ネパール、タイなど世界中を旅し、1999年よりニューヨークを拠点に制作活動を行う。シンプルでいてカラフル、インパクトのある独特 の作風で広く評価され、MoMA PS1(ニューヨーク現代美術館)やボ ストン現代美術館、マルメ美術館(スウェーデン)、チルドレンズ美術館(ニューヨーク)などで個展を開催。現在、コペンハーゲンとロサンゼルスを拠点に活動。⁣

Born 1978 in Kagawa and raised in Osaka.⁣
Kawai makes work that keeps the innocent, honest integrity of adolescent playfulness, but on a more grand and sophisticated level. Her practice runs the gamut of media, taking shape on canvas, in freestanding sculpture, on wall-mounted papier-mâché constructions, artists’ books, ceramics, furniture, and even her smiley / sad stone editions. Regardless of medium, Misaki’s work gently but incisively prods at the bizarre minutiae of contemporary culture, lampooning it with a disarming sweetness.⁣
She combines the magical with the mundane, pursuing a direct expression from brain to hand, trying to shortcut conscious and intentional stylistic decisions. Her work is bold, colorful, spontaneous and driven by artistic intuition. Her visual language,⁣
influenced by east and west, combines humor with tragedy, reality with dream, conflict with harmony.⁣
Kawai has had solo exhibitions around the world, including the Institute of⁣
Contemporary Art in Boston; Malmö Konsthall in Sweden; Children’s Museum of Arts in New York; and the Watari Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo; and has been featured in shows at PS1 and Deitch Projects in New York. Recent solo exhibitions were held in New York and Copenhagen, as well as a traveling exhibition in Korea.⁣
Her work is currently on display at the 2019 Honolulu Biennial and Hudson Yards in New York.⁣
She currently lives and works between Copenhagen and Los Angeles.
