Sara, Taj and I are officially on family vacation in East Africa. Yesterday we crossed the border from Uganda to Rwanda on one of the most beautiful drives I’ve ever experienced. Upon entry to Rwanda we drove through a valley of the most fertile land I’ve ever seen. Miles and miles of tea growing in a flat valley between two mountain ridges. Almost everyone in this valley uses bicycle to get around. Sometimes carrying very large loads. A much different vibe than Uganda where motorcycles or “boda-bodas” as they are known (which is slang for “border to border”, because they’re so quick they can get you across country so fast) are the vehicle of choice. When crossing the border Rwandan border agents search your luggage for plastic bags. Why? Because plastic bags are illegal in this country. You won’t find them anywhere. Especially on the ground. The reason is that after the Rwandan genocide, a plan was made to revitalize the country and the first step was to clean up the mess that had occurred during the fighting. The last Saturday morning of each month, for three hours, the entire nation, literally everyone, cleans up their communities and gets rid of any garbage, making Rwanda the cleanest nation I’ve ever seen and it’s capital city Kigali the cleanest city in Africa. This country is fascinating in the way it has revitalized itself following the genocide, through agriculture, economics, reconciliation and the spirit of “Umuganda”. The word can be translated as 'coming together in common purpose to achieve an outcome'. In traditional Rwandan culture, members of the community would call upon their family, friends and neighbours to help them complete a difficult task. Modern Rwanda is doing this on a national level. More to come. #stayhuman #Rwanda #frantication #Kigali
