#DorotheaTanning was born in 1910 in Galesburg, Illinois and died in 2012 in New York. Here she is pictured in Sedona, Arizona with a dog belonging to Max Ernst. The image of the dog – first based on Ernst’s pet, Katchina, and then on the Pekinese dogs she owned throughout her life – often appears in her paintings. ?

The artist’s exhibition at Tate Modern is a celebration of her seven-decade career, from her surrealist paintings to her pioneering fabric sculptures. Amazingly, Tanning continued to create artwork and poetry until her death at the age of 101.
