Photo by @renaeffendiphoto | Literature had a tremendous influence on my work, and even though I photograph reality I draw a lot of inspiration from fiction. Arundhati Roy is a writer who I have admired for many years. I read her first novel, “The God of Small Things,” just when I started as a photographer. The many layers of her visceral prose, her use of light and color, her sense of humor and tragedy, the brittleness, the subtlety, and the depth of her visual world had a powerful impact on me. I recently read her latest novel, “The Ministry of Utmost Happiness,” and again there were random but somewhat divine connections between the images she had described in the book and some of the photographs I had taken in real life. Arundhati Roy is an iconic writer, and I am in absolute awe of her talent. Last year I had the fortune of meeting her in person as I worked on taking her portrait in New Delhi. She took me to the streets of a neighborhood where her latest novel was set. When I later read her book, I was teleported to the alleys, temples, and cemeteries she had shown me; once again, fiction and reality blended in a very delicious mix.
