I just had the opportunity to visit the gray whale wintering grounds in Baja California this past week, which is something any hardcore wildlife or whale lover should try to do. After growing up along the California coast, watching these whales migrate by for years, it was amazing to finally see where they were congregating. Here in these warm, shallow, and protected lagoons, mothers can give birth to their young while other adults go about their courtship and mating rituals. On top of all of this, these whales are extremely friendly, leading to many unbelievable moments. This adult gray whale, who measured around 40 feet, was very curious with my large camera set up, and liked to stick her nose and eye right near the dome, as she investigated the strange device. As a person who has watched and photographed whales all over the world, this was one of the most incredible and powerful experiences with these gentle giants I have ever had. I look forward to seeing them on their northbound migration over the coming weeks!
