Komine Castle in Shirakawa City is a beautiful place to visit any time of the year, but I especially love visiting in springtime. This castle was closed for a number of years after the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 2011 due to the damage the surrounding walls were subjected to. The castle, however, was virtually untouched, despite the the fact it is entirely made out of wood! I love this castle because instead of being changed into a museum, it’s basically empty (except for some information signs). This means you can appreciate the amazing structure of the wood, and explore it while imagining what life might have been like in the samurai eras!
