On March 11, 2011, Japan was hit by a major earthquake that triggered a tsunami. In the days that followed, a nuclear accident wreaked havoc on the coast of Fukushima prefecture and caused the evacuation of over 160,000 people.

Fukushima was severely affected by this triple disaster, but over the following years, it has managed to take bold steps toward revitalization.

By visiting these 3 places, you can see the recovery efforts for yourself and support Fukushima’s reconstruction.

1️⃣ Commutan Fukushima (Centre for Environmental Creation Communication Building)
📍Location: Miharu town (central area)
Commutan hosts interactive displays about Fukushima’s environmental situation, with clear explanations about radiation and science. It is a popular destination for students and children.

2️⃣ The Ruins of Ukedo Elementary School
📍 Location: Namie town (coastal area)
All students and teachers had evacuated safely from this school when the tsunami hit, but the building sustained great damage. Visitors can enter and see the school, which was left mostly unrepaired to show the full extent of the destruction caused by the tsunami.

3️⃣ The Great East Japan Earthquake and Nuclear Disaster Memorial Museum
📍 Location: Futaba town (coastal area)
Through objects recovered from the disaster, storytelling, research, and interactive exhibits, visitors can learn about Fukushima’s recent history and revitalization, as well as the decommissioning of the TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, and listen to testimonies of residents.
