Did you know the saiga antelope’s nose helps it survive in its central Asian habitat of dry steppes and deserts? During summer, the desert air can get very dusty, and in the winter the air becomes bitterly cold. But the saiga’s impressive nose filters out dust and warms the air it breathes! It also has a coat that changes with the seasons, becoming lighter during warmer months and growing heavier in the cold. Unfortunately, the saiga antelope is under threat due to poaching for its horns and fur, extreme weather, and disease.

These animals are so utterly fascinating. I first learned of their existence in Planet Earth II, and now I know more about them thanks to this post!

Why don't they call it the double-trunked elephant antelope? Just curious. 'Saiga' does NOT come to mind when I see one.

Have any major die outs occurred since that last one? Rather disturbing when it happened!

Isn't this one of the only animals is the world to only give birth to twins?
