Nearly 10,000 refugees—mostly from Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan— many suffering wartime trauma that is exacerbated by the overcrowded, static plight, remain stranded on the island. They live in precarious conditions, unwilling to go back to the countries they left and unable to reach Athens to move forward toward the opportunity they had hoped to find in European countries.
