Millions of years of organic sediments congealed to create this precious stone, forging the core of these severe mountains running along the Italian sea. The white stone of Carrara is reckoned since Roman times as the finest marble. Ancient excavation techniques preserved these mountains for centuries, but the acceleration that new extraction technology offers has violently increased the destruction—here in the last thirty years, more marble has been removed than during the past two millennia.
