Annie Mae Young made her first quilt while still a child, following knowledge traditionally handed down from mother to daughter in the region. It was a photograph of one of Young’s quilts around a half a century later that launched the quilters of Gee’s Bend to national fame. (Text from the exhibition catalogue, by Jenevive Nikolak)
See “Blocks and Strips,” 1970 and “Bars,” 1965 in #AmericanOutliers, on view through March 17.

Since 2016, @womeninthearts has been asking this question on social media each March during Women’s History Month using the hashtag #5WomenArtists. Stay tuned for content related to the campaign on our Instagram and Twitter.
