This photo was taken in 1899 at the siege of Apia in Samoa. Notice how there are two women at the forefront of the picture preparing to battle. This was quite common during war. Women traditionally can have high levels of authority within a Polynesian hierarchy structure. In Samoa a woman can hold the title of Matai ( chiefly title) with about 10% of Matai being women. In Tongan culture the Woman has the highest position in the family structure known as the ‘ Fahu’ . The Fahu is the family Matriach and is given the greatest level of formal and informal respect within a family.
