One of the few presidents with an engineering background, Jimmy Carter served in the US Navy from 1946 to 1953 and worked on submarines such as the USS Pomfret and the USS Barracuda. He was also a part of the Navy’s nuclear submarine program, an experience that would go on to influence his views on atomic energy during his presidency.
