“Rest well, rover. Your mission is complete.” After months of failed efforts to revive communications with NASA’s Mars rover Opportunity, scientists announced Wednesday that its record-breaking mission had officially ended. “Oppy,” as the rover is affectionately known, far outlasted its original 90-day mission: the robot landed on Mars in 2004 and proceeded to explore the planet’s surface for 15 years, sending back data and more than 200,000 photos, including some of those pictured above. Soon after it arrived, Opportunity made the breakthrough discovery that water once flowed on the Red Planet’s surface — signaling the conditions for life once existed there. “Whatever loss we feel now must be tempered with the knowledge that the legacy of Opportunity continues,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate.
