This guitar belonged to Elizabeth “Libba” Cotten, who was writing songs by age 12 and won her first (and only) Grammy in her 90s.
Left-handed, Elizabeth “Libba” Cotten taught herself to play the guitar and banjo upside down and backwards. “I learned the banjo upside down because I couldn’t change [the strings] because it belonged to my brother,” she explained. Cotten’s method of playing resulted in a warm and rolling style completely unique to her, now known as “Cotten-style.” #SmithsonianMusic #MusicHistory #MusicMondays #EntertainmentHistory #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackHistory #AfricanAmericanHistory #WomensHistory #GrammyAwards #GrammyHistory #AmericanHistory
