Photo by David Chancellor @chancellordavid | A professional hunter stands in front of a white rhino in South Africa's Eastern Cape province. It's a so-called thrill without the kill: "vita-dart" hunting involves a client (hunter) shooting a rhino with a dart full of vitamins, a legal activity requiring a TOPS (Threatened Or Protected Species) permit, issued by provincial wildlife authorities. The vitamins have no effect on the rhino whatsoever other than pissing it off—never a good plan. A vet who is on standby then pursues the rhino and fires a second dart, filled with a tranquilizer. The hunter is then taken to the rhino and poses for trophy pictures, as he would if the rhino had been killed. The rhino is photographed and measured, and a taxidermist makes a fiberglass replica for the hunter's trophy room. The rhino is checked over by the vet, woken, and set free. This type of hunting is now recognized by various hunting associations as a "kill hunt"; the hunter can include it in his "big five" tally and enter it into record books and hunting competitions in the darted rhino category.
