Atis Rezistans artist Andre Eugene believes in turning his face toward the light in his studio on Grand Rue in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. His ancestors were taken from the shores of Africa and across the Middle Passage. "We can never be certain of the total number of Africans who arrived in the New World as slaves but scholarly estimates put the number at 10 to 12 million," according to Jamaica-born scholar and professor Colin Palmer. This month we honor those who had no choice in coming and celebrate the widespread contributions of their descendants across the Americans and throughout Europe. #blackhistorymonth #africa #haiti #stillstanding
