Every aspect of this figure, from squinting eyes to torn tongue and flamelike hair, contributes to an image of torment. In one of the great stories of hubris, the satyr Marsyas challenged the god Apollo to a musical competition. Apollo triumphed and then flayed his challenger as punishment. Here, Balthasar Permoser condensed the tragic climax of the story into a hauntingly intense portrayal of Marsyas' agony. See this work in Gallery 548. #TheMet #BalthasarPermoser #Marsyas #sculpture
