“When I look at the history and the brilliance of African Americans, it gives me a tremendous amount of optimism with perspective,” writes @lavernecox, an actor, activist and producer, and the first openly transgender person to receive an Emmy nomination for acting, for TIME. “It is horrible what far too many of us have endured.
