The first law that Bill signed into effect, 26 years ago this week, was the Family and Medical Leave Act. He made it a priority because he believed that no one should lose their job because they need time to care for a family member, welcome a new child, or recover from illness themselves. The FMLA allows employees up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave. Twenty-six years on, it's clear that it was necessary then and that we need more protections for workers and families now—including paid family and sick leave for everyone.
