Europe’s largest economy is taking a big step toward its commitment to clean energy. ? Germany’s coal-fired power plants should be completely shut down by 2038, a government-appointed commission announced.

This is a part of Germany’s strategy to shift to renewables. Last year, renewables actually beat coal for the first time ever, making up more than 40% of the energy mix.

The plan will also provide $45.7 billion in aid to coal-mining regions affected by the exit. “A large majority of the population stands behind this exit from coal ... but it must be reliable, affordable and acceptable for the regions,” said Barbara Praetorius, an environmental professor who served as one of the four leaders of the commission.
