Photo by Karla Gachet @kchete77 | Eduardo and Maria Guadalupe Castellanos pose for a photo in their home in Homedale, Idaho. They are originally from Chapala, a small town in Jalisco, Mexico. Maria Guadalupe was the driving force for her family. She moved them to Tijuana, then crossed the border illegally while nine months pregnant, arriving in Los Angeles in 1979. The couple, who had 11 kids, finally moved to Idaho to save them from gang violence. Frankie Castellanos remembers their life growing up: ”In Los Angeles Mom did a lot of seamstress work, sold clothes in swap meets, and the kids went door-to-door to sell the clothes she made. She also cooked for big parties—she was quite the cook—like catering. Dad did construction work when we moved to Idaho. But the whole family kind of wound up working in the fields. It was work that no one had really done, but they took on the challenge for the better of the family. It’s funny because we still sit and laugh about how bad we were at working the fields. It’s work that no one had really done. I still remember some of the Texas migrant kids making fun of me, and my family telling me how much we sucked at field work!” This photo was shot #onassignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック with @ivankphoto. The story was published in the July 2018 issue's “How Latinos Are Shaping America’s Future.” #Latinos #latinxpower #facesofthefuture #latinowomen #familystories
