Photo by @Joel Sartore | Most people think of mosquitoes only as insects that suck blood, BUT they have another surprising niche in the ecosystem: they pollinate flowers! The mosquitoes making a snack out of my feet were likely females that need the protein in blood in order to produce eggs. Male mosquitoes never bite, and as it turns out, their main source of food is actually nectar from plants. While mosquitoes don’t gather pollen like bees, they do fly from flower to flower to feed, transporting pollen from one blossom to another along the way.
