Here are my four grandparents, Anna & Solomon on my mom’s side (at my parents’ wedding), and Eva & Jack on my dad’s side (at my brother’s bar mitzvah.) All four were Holocaust survivors. As it’s #HolocaustRememberanceDay, I called my mom to get an idea of how many members of my immediate family were lost. She didn’t have a definitive number and said that growing up in Israel, no one ever counted. What she could tell me is that from our immediate family, 4 of my great-grandparents, 7 of my great-aunts and uncles and their spouses if married, their children, and my maternal grandfather’s first wife and two daughters were all killed. (My maternal great-grandmother died of a stroke a week before the Nazis came and was considered lucky.) Wanted to take a moment today to remember them, those we lost, and the survivors, whose mental willpower to live through that and rebuild is a strength I feel is superhuman. The four people above survived the camps, started families, and ended up living long and fulfilling lives. Feel like it’s important to talk about these things, especially now at this crucial time in American history, so let me end by saying I’ll forever be humbled and grateful to them for raising my small, often-times dysfunctional but special family ❤️ #holocaustmemorialday
