‘Not the usual suspects’ ? The Market Photo Workshop exhibition at Iziko South African National Gallery. ➡️ In 1989 the world-renowned photographer David Goldblatt and some friends founded the Market Photo Workshop, a school of photography, a gallery, and a project space, which played a pivotal role in the training of South Africa’s photographers. Its mission is providing affordable photography education to people who otherwise have no access to photography and triggering debates about the role of the medium, reflecting on the issues of change and representation in the visual culture. After 30 years of the school activity, the Iziko South African National Gallery presents a huge exhibition, titled ‘Not the Usual Suspects’, as a tribute to the Market Photo Workshop (up until 21 April, 2019). The show features more than 100 artworks by more than 30 artists and broads the Market Photo Workshop archives, questioning the contemporary debates about education, histories and visibility of artists in the public sphere.
