Dated to 1781, this early work by female artist Marie-Victoire Lemoine, on offer in our Master Paintings Sale on 30 January, depicts Madame de Genlis - a writer and mistress of Philippe, Duke of Orléans. A serious academic, Genlis made history when she became the first female governess to the royal sons, making her responsible for their education. 10 years later, Adelaide Labille-Guiard painted a very different portrait of Madame de Genlis, now on view at @ロサンゼルスカウンティ美術館 , evoking a more serious, even foreboding, personality that captures the power and influence she held in the Orleans family.
