今日の和菓子: 花びら餅
正月を迎えたことを祝い、新年に初めて釜をかける初釜。平成最後の成人の日に、平成最後となる初釜茶事を無事終えることができました。人様にお菓子をお出しするのは何回やっても緊張しますが、良い機会を与えてくださった先生に感謝。個人的に白味噌が入った花びら餅の餡がとても好きなので、お正月限定の和菓子というのが惜しいですが…

Today’s Wagashi: Flower Petal(Hanabira Mochi)
I’m glad to tell everyone that our first tea ceremony of the year (Hatsugama) went well. This will be the last Hatsugama of the Heisei Period. I was in charge of creating Hanabira mochi; the special Haoanese confectionary for this ceremony. Each element of the Hanabira Mochi is significant. The red colour showing through the white mochi is not only appropriate to the celebration of the new year, but also signifies the Japanese apricot/plum (ume) blossom, which in turn represents purity, perseverance, and renewal associated with New Year.
