The weather could not have been more different from this January, with Storm Norma causing heavy rains, high winds, and freezing temperatures in Beirut, whereas in January 2016 the city was experiencing unseasonably hot weather. On the Corniche, a long promenade that encircles Beirut, people were relaxing and enjoying the views over the Mediterranean. Lebanon hosts an estimated 1.5 million Syrian refugees who fled war in Syria starting in 2011, and many live in temporary accommodation.
