"I think my mother died because of the hunger and coldness.” Julia Tahawe, Rosy’s mother, died in July 2016 after being transferred from Life Esidimeni, a specialized care facility, to Precious Angels, a non-governmental organization.
It is known as the worst human rights scandal in democratic South Africa. Trying to save money, 1,700 people with mental illness and intellectual disability were moved from Life Esidimeni into unlicensed care homes. Within two years, 144 people died.
