Amboseli National Park lies on the northern flood plains of Africa’s most famous and tallest mountain, Kilimanjaro. Other than its spectacular views of the peak, it’s also famous for its large (both in number and physical size) elephant herds. We spent most mornings here waking up before sunrise to drive across the plains looking for elephants commuting from the acacia forests to the swamps. We would zip back and forth from herd to herd as they marched out from the shadows and into the open, then doing the same thing in the evening as they headed back into the trees. In this photo, you can clearly see the matriarch in the middle, leading the way as her family crowds around her, making sure to keep the little ones safe within the center.
