? The Good of The Hive artist Matthew Willey had an opportunity to paint with female gray seal Kjya at American Trail! As part of the Zoo’s enrichment and training program, seals are trained to hold objects in their mouths, such as X-Ray plates, for dental exams. Participation is voluntary, and animals are rewarded for doing the behaviors asked of them. Assistant Curator Rebecca Sturniolo is training Kjya to hold a modified brush in her mouth for a fun enrichment painting session. Keepers use non-toxic, water-based paint to ensure the experience is both fun and safe for Kjya. Every time she paints the canvas, Kjya is rewarded with one of her favorite foods: squid! ?
