In honor of the wide breadth of Christmas traditions around the world, we’re sharing a work from #HalfthePictureBKM by Mexican photographer #GracielaIturbide. One of Mexico’s best-known photographers, Iturbide’s breakthrough series focused on the indigenous Zapotec people in the town of Juchitán de Zaragoza, Oaxaca, where women dominate all aspects of social life, from the economy to religious rituals. Madonna (1981) pictures a woman in Mexico City who holds a baby while wearing a crown of thorns, referencing the sacrifices of motherhood and historical representations of the Virgin Mary. #FelizNavidad and #MerryChristmas!
