Photo by @hammond_robin | “I saw death in his eyes,” said Reverend Joe Maboe, after seeing his son Hendrick in July 2016. Hendrick, who had schizophrenia, was staying at Life Esidimeni, a care facility in Gauteng, South Africa. Without the family’s permission, Hendrick was transferred out of the home and into an organization that purported to care for people with his needs. When Joe eventually found his son weeks later, he was starving, soaked in urine, depressed. He took Hendrick to the hospital, but it was too late. He died four days later. It has come to be known as the worst human rights scandal to hit democratic South Africa. In an attempt to save money, 1,700 people with mental illness and intellectual disability were moved from Life Esidimeni into unlicensed care homes. Within two years, 144 people died. Causes of death included starvation, dehydration, and cold. No one has faced criminal charges. The relatives want justice. To see more follow @onedayinmyworld
