This clothing, for many in the West, has become a symbol of oppression; a black blanket we put on strangers. But not every woman who wears an abaya is living a life devoid of rights, freedoms or joy. .
I was in Qatar recently and the women I had the privilege of hanging out with were intelligent, vibrant, fierce creatures who’s lives looked more similar to mine than different. When they wear their abayas, they feel beautiful, as did I, on this day when I chose to wear one myself. .
I am not a Muslim, but I am the same as so many of them - I want to live a good, peaceful life full of love and faith, and, if I can, bless others along the way.
