In solidarity with the hard working people of France, Europe and the world who over the last month have shown their first major expression of social discontent since the 1968 general strike. People who work some of the most important jobs in our societies deserve so much better than the deal they have been handed in a time when economic inequality in the developed world has reached levels simply unsustainable for a functioning democratic society.
Senseless violence, looting and decimation of cultural artifacts of course is no way progressive and only derails any genuine movement. Having said that far-right wing, xenophobic and radical forces can seize ANY opportunity of social uprising to serve their ends. As can the state in covert ways, which historically it has been known to do. At the end of the day what is this violence compared to the systematic every day violent oppression carried out by the ruling elites over their own people or the people of foreign lands which they wish to colonize or keep colonized?
None of this should ever make us bitter towards the majority of working people who are simply looking for a fairer more liberated life for themselves and their children. Who are disappointed as any of us with the way the world is “progressing.” Who are real human beings with real lives deserving of the same respect and dignity as anyone else. #jesuisungiletjaune
