This wonderfully decorated silver tray is known as a ‘salver’. The word comes from the Spanish ‘salva’ – the tray from which the king’s taster sampled food to avoid anything poisoning the king. This example was made in Nuremberg, Germany in the early 17th century and features lots of fine details like winged figures, fruits and foliage, biblical scenes and cherubs. Swipe to see some closeups!

You can see this beautiful piece of silverware, along with other treasures from the Renaissance on display in Room 2a.
