The word ‘manga’ (漫画) has been used in various ways over the last two centuries. Artist Katsushika Hokusai – famous for his ‘Great Wave’ print – first published his ‘Hokusai manga’ in 1814. These books are collections of assorted sketches, not narratives that tell a specific story, so while Hokusai brought the word manga to popular attention, he also thought about it differently than we do today. The sketches in the series shown here wouldn’t be considered manga in the modern sense.
