I’ve been having more discussions with the kids about religion lately. Last night, Mazzy asked if there were more Christian people in the world than Jewish people. As a kid in NYC, it’s hard to see that the Jewish population is so small everywhere else. She also asked if she was allowed to switch to Christian. She said, “Not that I want to. I’m just curious.” I said, “Yes, anyone can convert to any religion. But being Jewish is also a big part of our family traditions, our culture and where we came from. It’s not just about our religious beliefs or what holidays we celebrate.” I think she’s at the age where she wants to believe everything about her is THE BEST and was trying to figure out where Judaism falls on a fourth grade awesomeness spectrum. I tried to explain that all religions are different and no religion is better than the other. I also said that a lot of people choose not to identify with any religion at all. But none of this seemed to be what Mazzy wanted to hear. So then, in an attempt to instill some Jewish pride (please forgive the generalization), I said, “You know what a lot of Jewish people are known for? Having a good sense of humor.” “Really??” Now Mazzy was interested. “Yes, a lot of famous comedians are Jewish.” “Who?” I thought hard to think of someone’s name she would recognize. “Jerry Seinfeld.” Mazzy’s eyes widened. She sees her dad watch old episodes of Seinfeld all the time and we reference Seinfeld-isms in our home often. “JERRY SEINFELD IS JEWISH????” “Yep, he is!” “Wow. That’s pretty awesome.” Score one for Judaism. Thanks, Jerry!
