This Sunday is Mazzy’s 9th birthday. But these gifts are not for her. They are for another little girl who lives in NYC and also turns nine this Sunday. Mazzy was matched with her through an organization started by two friends of mine called @birthdaybud, which matches kids in need with kids who can give, who happen to share a birthday. After signing up, we got an email with Mazzy’s Birthday Bud’s name, her address and her wish list, which included a toy she wants and a few essential items that she needs. Then we bought the gifts, wrapped them and sent everything directly to her, with a birthday card from Mazzy. I’m told that the parents of most buds send a thank you note back, which I think is an excellent way for your child to see that small acts of generosity can make a real impact. Mazzy will have the same birthday bud until they both turn twelve! If you are looking for simple ways to teach your kids about giving to people who are less fortunate, I can’t think of an easier way to do it!
