Photo by @Cristina Mittermeier // Sargassum, a tropical species of algae, has bloomed out of control in the Caribbean due to excessive nutrient runoff and was abundant in this area in Mexico. It caused me a lot of frustration on this shoot as it filled my snorkel and got in the way of many shots. Maneuvering my way through this algae, I took this photo of a whale shark as it swam directly towards me, sunlight shimmering across its spotted body. Although they are the world’s largest fish, whale sharks are known as the ‘gentle giants’ of the sea and are completely harmless to humans as they feed primarily on plankton. #FollowMe at @Cristina Mittermeier for more photos of some of our ocean’s most fascinating creatures. #whaleshark #Mexico #underwaterphotography #ocean
