The Jedi knights may help protect a galaxy far, far away, but our GEDI will help us study and understand forest changes right here on Earth. This poster is an artist’s depiction of NASA’s newest tool—GEDI—and illustrates in the abstract the amazing new things that the GEDI mission will be able to accomplish.

Launched aboard SpaceX’s 16th resupply mission to the International Space Station on December 5th, GEDI (Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation) will use a self-contained laser to measure nearly all of the temperate and tropical forests on Earth from space.

GEDI’s precise measurements of forest canopy height, canopy vertical structure, and surface elevation greatly advance our ability to characterize important carbon and water cycling processes, biodiversity, and habitat. The mission’s data on surface structure will also be of immense value for weather forecasting, forest management, glacier and snowpack monitoring, and the generation of more accurate digital elevation models. GEDI provides the missing piece – 3D structure – in NASA’s observational assets which enables us to better understand how the Earth behaves as a system, and guides the actions we can take to sustain critical resources.
