Photo by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz | Butterfly catcher with a sample of his wares near M’Bata, Central African Republic. These butteflies are exported to collectors all over the world through a missionary organization. It’s a small group that provides income to enterprising locals, giving them a sustainable interest in protecting forest biodiversity.
Each butterfly species is associated with a particular kind of tree, and they appear once a year during the flowering event of the tree’s life cycle. To catch them, he walks along a forest trail putting out daubs of dog excrement mixed with his own urine, and the butterflies come down from the canopy to feed on this pungent and nutrient-rich mixture.
