Katharina Grosse's large-scale sculpture "Ingres Wood" is now on view at MAXXI, Rome, as part of the museum's permanent collection.

The work comprises segments of a massive tree trunk piled over voluminous draped fabric, spray-painted across all surfaces. Felled just last year, the pine tree was famously planted by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres while he was director of Villa Medici, Rome, from 1835 to 1841, in order to frame an ancient statue of Dea Roma (the personification of Rome as a goddess).
