C. Vivian Stringer got her first win as a women's basketball coach in 1971 with Cheyney State in Philadelphia. She was 22 years old and got the coaching job by asking the college president for more responsibility. "The president told me I had to teach swimming and organizing administration and health," she has said. "But I wanted to coach that basketball team! So I said, 'Well can I coach the basketball team?' He said, 'Well young lady, I imagine that you can.'" ⁣

Last night, Coach Stringer won her 1,000th career victory as a coach. She's just the ninth coach in the history of the sport to reach that milestone, the fifth NCAA Division 1 women's coach and the first African American. Congrats, Coach Stringer, and here’s to 1,001.
