A new book suggests that the stages of grief should also include anxiety. Anxiety: The Missing Stage of Grief, written by Claire Bidwell Smith, LCPC, a Los Angeles–based therapist specializing in grief, proposes that we add anxiety into the phases associated with grieving, which currently affects 18 percent of the U.S. population—roughly 40 million people, no thanks to our pressurized, tech-driven, social media consuming world. As Joan Didion, once wrote, “We tell ourselves stories in order to live.” For a new generation, the blossoming of grief on social media makes perfect sense. Where else do we now construct our autobiographies in real time?
