A gift of friendship from France to America, the #StatueofLiberty came to symbolize American ideals of #democracy and #freedom. The pictured work belongs to an edition of cast terracottas produced after a preliminary model, which was created to help raise funds for the statue’s construction. Although there are numerous differences between the early model and the final statue, you can still see Lady Liberty’s defining characteristics: the radiant crown, the torch raised high, and the tablet inscribed with the date of the U.S. Declaration of Independence.
