Photo by @pedromcbride // Portrait of a modern woman: Nkylian is a Samburu woman who creates beaded jewelry for tourists in her home country of Kenya and far beyond: from gift shops at zoos in Australia to stores like Whole Foods in America. In the semi arid lands where Nkylian grew up, low literacy levels and sparse government services hamper economic growth. Poverty rates are high, and degraded landscapes constantly challenge the livelihoods of largely pastoralist communities like hers. Through community conservancies, people like Nkylian are now seeing the value of wildlife conservation and tourism which fuels the growth of sustainable small businesses. This is putting her children in school, empowering her fellow women with income and financial literacy, and building the capacity for rural communities to lift themselves out of poverty.
