Photo by @chien_chi_chang | I have been working in New York’s Chinatown since 1992—for more than 26 years—and it is still a project in progress. Immigration is often propelled by suffering. To witness the shifting patterns of populations is to see the world in all its exigencies—war, natural disasters, repression, famine, poverty and persecution.
But there is a rainbow at the bottom of that Pandora’s box of troubles; hope, too, propels immigrants to settle in strange lands. I should know: I am one myself.
I have followed and photographed twenty families in Chinatown, and those relationships are now culminating in a tri-generational drama. The people in these pictures were all willing to sacrifice their immediate comfort to realize the dream of giving their children a "better" life. Some of that first wave of immigrants have now returned to China to enjoy the rest of their lives in prosperity, with family members they have not seen for decades. Others are trying to live the American dream.
The common thread, the universal quality in this work, is the essential human need to hold hope in your hands. #MagnumPhotos #cccontheroad
