Yet somehow this photo feels as familiar to me as a snapshot of the Brooklyn Bridge. I often fly along this same route through these same mountains in the same bush plane. From way up high, I fantasize about how I would know exactly where I was if I found myself in the valleys thousands of feet below. The reality of course is that I have no idea what lies beneath me in the beautiful and brutal landscape of the Alaska Range, or for that matter the majority of Alaska's approximate 50 million square miles of wilderness. // T.
