These structures, built by the Ancestral Pueblo people (often, and inappropriately, called the Anasazi), most likely date between 700-1250CE. By 700 there was a strong dependence on corn as a food source in the Cedar Mesa area as well as beans and squash. To survive long droughts these foods would have been stored in massive quantities to last several years in these cliffside granaries.
